Is Your Candy Bucket Already Full?

With Halloween around the corner, I’ve been thinking about candy buckets.

More specifically: what happens when the bucket is already full before we go looking for more candy?

We tend to think we know what’s taking up our capacity. It’s the obvious stuff: work, kids, money, relationships, plans, responsibilities, all the things life asks of us.

But there’s also the stuff we don’t always see: old expectations, worries we’ve normalized, grief we’ve learned to function around, decisions we haven’t made, and things we’ve been carrying for so long that we barely notice their weight anymore.

Think of everything you’re carrying as candy in that bucket.

Some things in the bucket are big. Some are small. Some have been sitting there for years, and some are brand new.

And not everything taking up room in the bucket is necessarily bad. Our work can be meaningful.

Relationships can enrich our lives. Our kids can bring us enormous joy. Personal growth can be exciting.

But even the good stuff takes up room.

And when we don’t stop to notice how much we’re already carrying, we can keep adding more without realizing how close we already are to capacity.

Another commitment. Another plan. Another favor. Another project. Another person who needs something. Another thing we tell ourselves we should be able to handle.

Sometimes we notice because we start putting things off. We struggle to commit. Our patience gets shorter. Small interactions start to feel bigger than they normally would, and we find ourselves wondering why everything suddenly feels like too much.

But maybe it didn’t happen suddenly.

Maybe the bucket was already full.

When we reach capacity, we don’t magically create more space. We start borrowing against the parts of ourselves that help keep us well and balanced.

We borrow against our sleep, our patience, our clarity, our health, our relationships, and even our joy.

And often, the good stuff starts disappearing first.

Fun gets pushed aside. Creativity fades. Hobbies drift further away. Presence becomes harder to hold. Peace and quiet begin to feel rare. And sometimes, this is when we start reaching for whatever helps us escape, numb out, or just get through the day.

This is why taking an honest inventory of what’s in your bucket matters.

What are you actually carrying right now?

What is taking up more room than you realized?

What may still be sitting in there simply because you’ve never stopped to question whether you still want to keep carrying it?

Maybe it’s an old expectation. A commitment you no longer want. A responsibility someone else could help with. A project that can wait. A worry you keep rehearsing. An old pattern you’re ready to interrupt.

The goal isn’t to dump the entire bucket on the floor and empty it out.

It’s simply to know what’s in it, recognize when you’re at capacity, and make some intentional choices about what stays, what can be reduced, and what might finally be ready to go.

With Halloween around the corner, take a little inventory before you head out trick-or-treating for more.

What might become possible with just a little more room in your candy bucket?
